Day care - Day Families

What is meant by Day Care?  A "Day Mother" approved by the Youth Office will welcome a few children (aged 2 to 12) on a daily basis (working days of course), either full time or part time at her home.  To date there are about 720 day families in the Canton of Geneva.

Parents who need their children looked after will have to contact either the coordination structure in their area or the Pro Juventute Foundation.

The local coordination structure oversees the placement of the children into families and offers support and advice, rather like an employment agency. Its role is to find the appropriate family to the specificities of each child.  It is the vital link between parents, children and day families.

As an alternative to the "crèche", here is the website of the Geneva Children Federation which includes all child minders and day families - now renamed "Home Day Care" - for the canton of Geneva.

There are also nurseries known as "home crèche", which combine day care and socialisation through games as in ususal crèches.
