“Llacjtamanta” is the name of a group of Peruvian folk dancers based in Geneva. Their name means “from my village” in Quechua. Of Andean origin, the group gives a faithful representation of contemporary Peruvian culture and sensitivity. This name is also that of an association that aims to promote and introduce Peruvian culture, particularly to young second generation Peruvians.
Passing on traditional folk dance art is one way to fulfill this objective. The group dances to traditional Peruvian folk music. The choreography is faithful to each dance and the costumes are made in Peru by dressmakers from different regions. Thus, the dance, costumes and choreography remain faithful to traditional custom. With this perspective to pass on and preserve cultural traditions, Gladys Ybargüen, one of the pillars of the group “Llacjtamanta” began, within the framework of workshops at the Museum of Ethnography, teaching these dances specifically to young children.
Through her clear teaching style and the fun of practicing within a group, children discover the broad repertoire of traditional Peruvian folk dance.
Classes take place Wednesdays from 2 pm to 4 pm.
